Problem(s):
Drawer bottom fell out. Drawer fell apart. Drawer slides/runners sticking or not closing. Drawer stays open. Drawer opens on its own. Drawer won’t close. Drawer runners came out of the cabinet. Drawer sitting crooked. Drawer front came off. Drawer gets stuck.
Solution(s):
If the drawer slide or runners are in good condition, they can typically be remounted. The slides/runners often have multiple screw locations, and we can use new holes to mount into a fresh location of the cabinet side. If that’s not possible, we can repair the existing holes in the cabinet side with wood dowels and fast setting glue to remount the slides/runners in the same location.
If the drawer front has fallen off, we can most often remount the door front, as long as the drawer is otherwise sound.
If a drawer needs to be rebuilt, we typically use a Blum drawer system called Tandembox Antaro. The sides are metal and come in a light grey or white colour. The bottom and back are ⅝” melamine and are held in with brackets that are part of the drawer system. They are adaptable and come in different depths and heights. They can either be used for external drawers or internal drawers with an aluminum front. (blum website showing internal drawer and external drawer with wood front)
The beauty of this solution is that we can economically solve the issue of a drawer not working by building a new drawer, often on site. We can then re-mount the existing wood or melamine drawer front, meaning that, from the outside, it looks exactly the same as it did before, but inside is a brand new, robust drawer that has an integrated soft close. (A push-to-open “tip-on” option is also available.)
Common Repair Request(s):
My drawer or runners are damaged and don’t work anymore. Why can’t you just just replace some parts?
We are sometimes able to replace side mounted slides/runners, depending on the application. However, when replacing these, the clearance varies between brands and their operation is sensitive to the clearance, so if the clearance is too small (by 1-2 mm), they will bind and not move smoothly.
There are also many brands of undermount drawer slides. The undermount slides we use are Blum Tandembox (show a pic from Blum website with attribution/link). They are proven in the market for reliability and durability. However, similarly, if a drawer box was made to accommodate another brand’s undermount slides, the drawer box may not be adaptable to simply mounting new Blum slides.
For these reasons, if a drawer or its moving components are not working properly or are physically damaged, it is usually best for us to build a whole new drawer. The time it takes to repair/rebuild an existing wood drawer (replace the bottom/side, replace and readjust slides, etc.) is comparable to the time it takes to build a new drawer, so we find that it’s more cost effective and provides a longer lasting result if the drawer is replaced. In this case, we reuse the existing drawer front and incorporate it into the new drawer, so that it still looks exactly the same from the outside.
I have a cabinet/shelf that’s hard to reach into. How can I see/reach all of the items?
One solution here is to add what’s called an internal drawer. It is usually behind a cabinet door that swings open. It solves the issue of deep, dark shelves like in a pantry or other cabinet where we would like easy access to the whole shelf’s contents without having to empty the shelf to find an item at the back. The shelf becomes a drawer with full extension and a sleek colour matched aluminum front. These are made to order and fit by the millimeter to your cabinet. We also use the Blum Tandembox Antaro system for this that comes in different depths and heights to also accommodate tall items like cereal boxes and mixers.
Another solution is a blind corner organizer, which we can install to maximize the storage capacity of corner or hard to reach cabinets. These come in many different styles, colours, and mounting options.
