Porch railings are important for the safety of a deck. They keep the occupants safe from falling off or down the stairs. Over time, depending on construction, condition, and care, railings can rot or become dislodged at the ends making them unable to support the load of someone leaning on them. It is also possible for railings to develop rot or decay at the post, especially at the base if water collects there. The pickets themselves can also show rot, especially at the bottoms where they meet the lower rail. A loose railing can quickly lead to a failed railing and can cause an injury to a family member or another user, which can open the owner to liability. That aside, who really wants a shaky, creaky, loose, scary railing or handrail anyway?
Exterior wood requires maintenance. It just does. That said, there are many options when it comes to repairing or rebuilding an outdoor railing, as well as how to prevent it from future decay. Depending on the assessed condition of the railing, we will see what is worth saving and see how cost-effective it is to save it. For instance, if the pickets are off the shelf square stock, we would lean towards replacing the rotten ones. If the pickets are ornate, decorative, or custom pieces, we may need to replicate new ones if entire replacements are needed or partial patches. Every situation is different!
