Over the range microwaves are extremely common in homes and condos, as they provide two functions in one appliance - a microwave with a built in range hood / exhaust fan. Like any appliance, they don’t last forever. These units may eventually need to be replaced either for appearance to match the other/new appliances or for function because they have stopped working. If these appliances stop working, typically the most cost effective solution is to replace the entire unit.

Over the range microwaves come in different widths and it is important to measure the inside width of the cabinet opening, the height of the unit, and it’s depth. The height and depth are somewhat negotiable within reason, but the width is critical as a unit too wide will just not fit. A typical size for an over the range microwave is 30”. We also have to account for the CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air that the fan will move. There are different suggested amounts for different room sizes, type of cooking, fuel source (gas vs electric), as well as other factors. We can advise on a choice that will fit your specific needs.

One special circumstance is when there is an existing range hood and space is at a premium, like in a condo.  There are slim versions of an over the range microwave that take up about the same height as a regular range hood and free up valuable counter space.

In addition to the size, for the installation of a new unit we have to take into account the duct size in the home/condo, as well as the duct size on the new unit so we can adapt the new microwave ducting to the existing duct.  There are some off the shelf pieces we can use and often need to adjust them to suit the final installation.  One other important addition to the ducting is taping the seams with metal foil tape.  Have you ever noticed greasy/oily residue in your cabinet above the over the range microwave?  If so this is a result of the microwave/range hood sucking the fumes from the stove but the holes in the ducting allowing it to leak into the cabinet.  It will eventually condense and congeal together to stain the cabinet.  This is especially annoying when the items stored in that cabinet are covered in cooking guck.  By ensuring that the seams are fastened securely and taped completely we make sure the fan can do it’s best to exhaust the smells from your kitchen.

Depending on the installation, the support/backing plate for the new microwave may overlap some backsplash tiles in the existing kitchen.  We are able to work around this.  For this reason we bring different thicknesses of wood to act as a backer to match the tile thickness so the new support plate sits flat.  We are also adept at drilling through the tile to hit studs without cracking/damaging the tile.

Whatever stage you are at in the project, we can help by installing a new unit you have purchased and have on site, or measure and advise on a new unit that suits your needs. We can also source and install a new unit and remove the old one for recycling.
