Sliding mirrored closet doors are a great way to close off a closet and also provide a full length mirror. This can be a great way to open up a space by making a small space seem bigger which is especially useful in smaller condos.

A few of the common issues we see are:

  • The frame separating from the panel/mirror

  • Rollers or guides at the top or bottom breaking or dislodging from the tracks

  • Doors hitting each other when sliding

  • Doors not sliding properly

  • Top track separated from ceiling

  • Cracked mirror/panel

In many cases, existing doors can be adjusted or repaired. We are often able to supply and install new rollers or guides and even new tracks in some cases. Typically, in condos, we see white framed mirrored sliding doors, but sometimes these sliding doors just have a thin wood panel. If they are in good shape and an aesthetic change is desired, painting or wallpaper can be a good option too. However, in cases where the doors are beyond repair or new doors are desired, we can supply and install new doors in a variety of styles (see right for examples). Our favourite style is frameless as it gives the look of a continuous mirror.

There are some standard size doors (typically around 80” tall and 4’/5’ openings), and if the opening size allows standard sized doors can be more cost effective and a quicker turn-around versus custom sized doors. That said, we can measure your door opening and supply and install standard or custom sized doors made to fit perfectly.

Typically sliding mirrored closet doors are on a double track. On larger openings where 3 doors are necessary, we find it best to use a triple track. This way the doors can all be pushed to one side providing better access to the closet space. With 3 doors on a double track only ⅓ of the closet can be accessed at a time whereas with the triple track ⅔ can be accessed, making the closet much more functional to use.

When supplying new doors we have many choices including track colour (our favourite being titanium) and even glass tints. These are easy ways to have a more refined look that is different from every other condo out there and the additional cost is minimal.

For all of these sliding closet doors, it is very important that the doors are installed in the same plane and that the doors are plumb (straight up and down). If the tracks are not aligned with each other the doors will not slide smoothly and may bind. We adjust the doors so that they have a nice tight, consistent wall gap. Typically, people have an orientation they prefer based on how often they open certain doors or whether they are right or left handed, so we always ask clients what their preference is for the front or back door to be on the left or right side and adjust the doors accordingly. Plus, walls are almost never perfectly straight, so by knowing what their side preference is we can adjust the doors with the wall to look right.
